The "traditional" meaning of logistics covers tasks such as warehousing, order-picking, handling and transportation. The "modern" demarcation of the term incorporates a range of other operating and administrative activities. In the operating field, for example, this includes tasks in production supply and waste disposal and packaging. In the administrative sector, the range extends from warehouse and inventory management through supply chain planning to IT integration.

The increasing share of planning and strategic tasks within logistics is indicative of the way in which it is becoming an important tool for company management and an increasingly significant strategic success factor.
